Build Smarter
October 2005, Vol 18, No 1
FOCUS, Victoria Monthly Magazine
The twentieth century saw a boom in health and technology research. In the twenty-first century, conscientious service providers are applying the new knowledge to real life.
Vic Pross is one of the leaders.
He sees a need for environmentally safe, healthy homes and workplaces, so he builds them. His office walls are lined with product information and reference books from the many courses he takes every year to keep up to speed - and ahead of the curve - on developments in building technology. The journeyman carpenter with thirty years' experience knows which carpets and fiberboards are formaldehyde-free, which flooring stays warm and comfortable for decades, which paints are safe for people with environmental sensitivities. Vic points out that as the prevalence of allergies and sensitivities increase, and more people work in home offices environmental health has become more crucial than ever. Then there's the cost of energy for heating and ventilation.
"This describes the benefits of insulated concrete forms to improve energy efficiency and decrease moisture infiltration in a building, " Vic says, opening one volume. "It's got twice the insulation value of traditional framing and doesn't use conventional forms so it saves time during construction, too."
He has completed the R2000 builder's course, which has taught him more ways to decrease energy consumption and improve home comfort, and he begins a rammed-earth construction course this fall.
"Today there are so many different options to build with, compared to 20 years ago," he says. "We build smarter now."

Vic relies on more than technology; craftsmanship is the first thing on his mind with every project, from renovations to new construction, homes to commercial buildings. When the president of the National Home Warranty program toured three of Vic's new houses last year, he commented, "Vic, if everyone built like your company does, we wouldn't need municipal inspectors!"
Vic's attention to detail begins with each estimate: he includes a myriad of different components. He works with architects hired by his clients of he offers a complete design-build service. He provides a homeowners' maintenance manual that encompasses a myriad of information from cleaning eavestroughs to understanding new heat recovery ventilators.
"From the first encounter, I was impressed with the professional and low stress attitude of Victor Pross," writes Jonathan Mackey, one happy renovator.
Ken Macdonald and Vicki Davidoff enthused that Pross Construction delivered their heritage home renovation on time and on budget. "We chose Pross Construction because we felt that he understood the complexity of the project and would deliver a quality result. He did not let us down."
Low stress, on time and on budget are phrases that Vic's clients use again and again.
Build smart; for your healthy home or office, call Victor Pross.
